In 1993 I decided that if I were to ever make
a decent living I would have to learn how to
design using a computer. I took evening classes
in Autocad 2D and 3D at Central Piedmont Community
College, and registered with their placement
center. This turned out to be a very wise decision.
I got a call from the career counselor in late
February 1994 - someone was looking for a person
who could understand process control engineering
and who was a talented visual designer as well.
We arranged an interview for that Friday afternoon.
Within about thirty minutes time I was hired
as a Process Control Automation Designer for
Digital Systems, Inc.
I was surprised at how quickly I learned my
way around Windows 3.1, and although I knew
practically
nothing about designing control systems when
I started it seemed like no time before I was
creating very complex SCADA (System Control
And Data Acquisition) systems. I really enjoyed
my work and took pride in the fact that my
systems
were controlling very important multi-million
dollar processes.
With the first public
release of the Internet browser in the early
90s the scramble for www real estate was on.
My employer,
Parris Hastings, wanted to get a site up that
could easily pass information to our clients
and promote our services. My first tools for
the task were "Internet In a Box" and
the "Mosaic" browser, with of course
a crash course in HTML. Over the next 6 years
I was the company's webmaster in addition to
being the systems designer.
In
2001 the declining economy had taken its toll
on DSI's business, work became scarce,
and I was let go. I knew that there were far
fewer opportunities in SCADA system design
than in web site design and development, so
I made plans to attend Georgia Tech for certification
in web and multimedia design. Four months later
I was hired as the web and graphics designer
for A.T. Distribution. I enjoyed working at
ATD and learned a lot about both Graphic Design
and Website Development.
I accepted a new position with Affinity Automation (Formerly IEDLink) in 2003.
Our company provides "Energy and Power Management Solutions"and
my role is a Project Engineer. I also double as our company's Corporate Identity designer.
